Yes, there is a fun side to politics, at least when you look at the\u00a0dozens of politically-themed games in the collection here at Strong National\u00a0Museum of Play. Throughout American history, games of all sorts have often reflected current politics and events on the national scene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museumofplay.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/politics-game-with-uncle-sam-1.jpg\" style=\"width: 297px; height: 400px;\" title=\"Oswald B. Lords Game of Politics, Parker Brothers, about 1935, from the collection of Strong National Museum of Play.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beginning with mass-produced games in the late\u00a019th\u00a0century, card games and board games appeared that take patriotism and the presidency as their topics. Some taught facts about history while others were merely entertaining.\u00a0Others were\u2212and still are\u2212funny. A rare and beautiful printed cloth \u201cpin the tail\u201d game, dated 1890, shows the G.O.P. elephant, upon which players pin bags of peanuts instead of traditional tails. It&#8217;s &#8220;Pin the Peanuts on the Pachyderm!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center; clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museumofplay.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/grand-old-party-fixed-1.jpg\" style=\"height: 461px; width: 500px;\" title=\"Pin the tail game, Selchow &#038; Righter, 1890, from the collection of Strong National Museum of Play.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the 20th\u00a0century, games continued to be humorous.\u00a0This incredibly wacky Nixon ring toss game appeared in 1968, printed on very thin plywood\u00a0so it could\u00a0be punched out and assembled. Think Nixon&#8217;s nose would\u00a0make an easy target?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museumofplay.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/nixon-1.jpg\" style=\"height: 505px; width: 500px;\" title=\"Big Time Nose Around game, 1968, from the collection of Strong National Museum of Play.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A more serious game, <em>Glasnost,<\/em> appeared in 1989 and advertised itself as\u00a0&#8220;The game of Soviet-American peace and diplomacy.&#8221; More and more, contemporary games began to reflect very specific events and people in the political sphere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museumofplay.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/glasnost-1.jpg\" style=\"width: 308px; height: 400px;\" title=\"Glasnost card game, John N. And 1995&#8217;s <em>Clintonopoly<\/em> played up President Clinton\u2019s damaging connection to the Whitewater real estate controversy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center; clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museumofplay.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/reaganomics-1.jpg\" style=\"height: 314px; width: 500px;\" title=\"Reaganomics board game by Stockmann Mfg. Co., 1981, from the collection of Strong National Museum of Play.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These political games\u00a0may not be as\u00a0popular as\u00a0<em>SCRABBLE<\/em> and <em>Monopoly<\/em>, but they offer glimpses into the political climate of their times.
